"hey guys - here's the scoop on Sketchfu. We're going to keep it running and have all the drawings going indefinitely. So that's the good news. We won't pull the plug and will keep the servers going.on
On the other hand, we haven't been working on new features for the site in a long time - the reason is that Matt and I are very busy doing work on another project, which will eventually also involve drawing. This will take a lot more time to build, and has consumed all our time. The ads on Sketchfu is only making us like $50/month, which means we're losing a little money each month. It's not a big deal, but obviously we won't be making our paychecks using the site :)

Here are some of the things we've worked on over the last couple months to make it easier for people to spot the originals, avoid defacement, and own their work:
1) Originally, we didn't even have attributions - we added "Based on this drawing" and showed the chain of ownership
2) We didn't have the ability to delete drawings at the beginning, and we specifically developed that ability to remove drawings that were offensive.
3) We also made a new feature to be able to ban bad users that were repeat offenders, and have done so with a bunch of people.
4) We added a "download picture" link for people to store the originals of their drawings, for future use
5) We added some drawing management functions like deletion of your own stuff, in order to make it so that things like WIP or other drawings don't end up getting remixed accidentally.
I think the real heart of this issue is that when a drawing is getting remixed, how does the system automatically figure out whether it's a GOOD addition, or a BAD addition? And what controls do we give to people that respect both the art of the adders, as well as the original artists?
At the extreme, it's clear (at least to me) that taking out remixing is a bad idea. And at the other extreme, having remixes without attributions is also a bad idea. What's the right mix?
I've heard a couple suggestions:
1) Add a members-only section with dues and criteria for "regulars"
2) Remove the ability for remixers to undo any strokes, so that you don't have people undo-ing signatures
3) Adding a report abuse button
4) Letting any original artist delete or hide the work of a remixer
... what else? If you guys can create a nice bulleted list that continues on the one I have above, it would really help Matt and I during this discussion.
Again, please realize that remixing is at the heart of Sketchfu, and one person's "hijack" is another person's artistic reinterpretation. We need to be respectful of everyone's contributions to the site."

please will you help? My mother passed away on saturday, and as I had previously drawn her here I decided to use that drawing as a tribute to her. Someone had previously overdrawn my portrait by adding a cigarette to her mouth, which I was not happy about but just ignored. Now someone called imamhappy has written "spam spam spam" on my new drawing. Im afraid it has really upset me. I could just delete the drawing but would rather have their comments removed, and the drawing with the cigarette removed as well. Would you help me out and do this? Thank you in advance

Are you EVER wrong? GEEZ!! Ha, just playing. I really do appreciate all of your reasonings and explanations.
It was suggested to you guys a while back that many of us "older" artists would be more then happy to pay a fee to use, to have special members only section, but it would have to one that was maintained and worked consistently. Maybe with a few features the current site does not have like a way to private message.
There is, or rather was, a very strong community here of people committed to this site as artists and as friends. We like would nothing more then to see it succeed and work properly and are willing to put our money where our very vocal mouths are. FU is FUN and fantastic and the net has too few drawing communities. We know this takes time and money for you 2 and we would like to work with you find a solution that makes everyone happy and is fair to you both. We appreciate this lil spot on the net very much.

It seems that about 7 days ago I changed my picture icon, and now this site will not let me on as my original name: Snape.
It comes up as: "We're sorry, but something went wrong. We've been notified about this issue and we'll take a look at it shortly."
I tried the next day, then the next day, and it is the same box that comes up and says that. Sorry, but is it possible to fix it?

I cannot access my profile at all. I have tried linking to it from my drawings, from comments I made on others drawings, etc. I can access some profiles, like this one. I am a regular here and would truly appreciate being able to fully access my account. Thanks.
I don't understand how web sites work enough to understand why I can access everyones profile but my own. As many others have mentioned, your "top" artists, the ones that show up on the first few pages of "most cheered of all time" are all leaving for other drawing sites.
Web 2.0 as it is being vcalled, is about networking, people, even people of my advanced age *L* are interested in meeting like minded people. We had a really good group here and it is sad to see how everyone has left for web sites that work reliably. I know this site was just a lark for you 2 and that Matt used t6o work for a site that remixed music, so this was an experiment to see what a remixed art site would do. Well, look at your stats, it did well enough for you to be able to attract Google advertising and make money off the site. At least, if yopu are not intending to fix it, make changes, deal with it, would you please do the regulars who have supported this site with their fantastic art work a big favor and tell us once and for all...what you see is what you get here. that way we could decide to leave or not. As drawing is time intense, many of us just cannot frequent more than site. thanks.

I would like to ask you what is happening to sketchfu. Its obviously a case that demand is outstripping supply. I have a broadband comnnection but the lag between trying to look at a drawing and getting there is immense. Are there any changes you could make to save space or reduce the server requirements- Im no expert but surely the amount people chat must take up bamdwidth, would it be feasable to remove earlier comments? Maybe the voting system could be limited to one per person? Or if required the drawing space could be reduced slightly- It must take megabites to keep this place up and running! i really do appreciate sketchfu, it is a wonderful site full of great people, but if you loose the artists you loose the site! New artists must take one look at the lag and give up! If sites such as 2draw can cope there must be a way round this....hoping (possibly in vain) for a response...sigh
