About Xina54

thanks for all the fish . . .

Well it seems the campaign to save Sketchfu hasn't worked. We've had no response from Matt'n'Andrew for months. Thanks to everyone who got involved but I can't see it getting any better . . .
I have been drawing at Flying Ginkgo for some time now while making every effort to stir things up here to no avail. Ginkgo is a wonderful site, the owner is an artist herself and very committed to the site. They have a facility to upload the drawings you have done here (or anywhere else) so you won't lose any of your work. I also have an account at 2draw as a few artists from Sketchfu have gone there but Ginkgo is much smaller and friendlier. I'm hoping that if more follow we will be able to hold on to the wonderful community spirit we developed here.
So if you want to have a look for yourself…

http://www.floatingginkgo.com/index.php

A very special thank you all the wonderful friends I have made here and everyone who has cheered my drawings - I feel honoured that you have taken the time to look at my drawings and liked them. I really appreciate it and want you to know that without you I probably would have given up on my ambition to make drawing a daily habit.
Thanks again
love
Christina

Thanks so much for your comment and cheers. I really miss the "old days" here at SF. However, when it became a frustration instead of a treat to try and get on the site, the energy left, just like air out of a punctured balloon. Glad that FG has worked for you. I didn't put enough of myself into it to learn, so here I am, back again at SF, drawing and delighted to make reconnections with the talented and charming people such as yourself. You're lovely.

Thanks so much for taking the time to look at the pic of my grandson. I really wanted that one to come out well...he's adorable (most of the time!! :O ). Anyway! I have gone to floating ghinko and 2draw, but I can't really seem to learn how to navigate either site or make the tools work for me. I dunno, I'm thick headed...don't catch on too quick to things. I don't use the computer all that much so I guess it's just a matter of being a bit of a computer cave woman!! I'll keep trying till I learn how to use it!

Hello fellow English person. I ALWAYS remember our saints day despite being constantly told by our less than English government that we must all be 'british'. The flag is always flying at Georgie Towers here in Nottingham. Not had chance to browse your stuff yet but will do soon. I will give you a wave in Chesterfield next time I am on my way to the peaks. Keep drawing, (will hunt you down on Ginko too), and stick with the Fu cos we have a wonderful family here. Byeeeeee....

Well my dear, you nailed it!! Yearning is exactly how I am feeling right now and it is what that drawing was really about. I feel good that the correct emotion came across even with a different name for the piece. I am having a hard hard time drawing with this mouse. I can draw with A mouse, but this one gets stuck on the table, won't make anything round. So I can only draw certain things.

I hope to get to ginko to make comments at least soon but I felt I wanted to catch up here first. Since everyone left I am actually catching up a bit here *L* I know the drawings take longer to do at FG so maybe that will be easier. It is much easier to scroll thru one studio and see all the new art then hop from gallery to gallery. I will email you soon. big hugs.

Ah, but this is 'De Intarwebz', I can look any way I want! ;)
Seriously though, just wanted to show a portrait I drew recently to Gerry as she asked me about it. It does make me feel a bit self-conscious though, as if I'm walking around with somebody else's face, so I think I'll change it back soon. Plus, the girl whose portrait I drew hasn't given her consent to me using it as avatar..

I'll check out Ginkgo...thingy (well, that link you sent that I can't remember just now ;) I've looked at 2Draw earlier but I didn't really appeal to me for some reason, not the way Sketchfu does. And lag does seem to have improved, can see other people's profile again too.

Oh well, guess we'll just wait and see what happens.

Hi Xina ;-) I am responding to your very very kind & complimentary comment on my profile about what I mentioned to Flubbles. I really appreciate your encouragement & support. I said (and say) that I don't consider myself an artist because that's kinda how I feel. I DO love to draw & moreso, love to watch others draw & create, but I'm far from what I would consider a true artist, as I view others. I'm not 'fishing' for compliments (but they certainly were nice!). I pleasure draw to help destress and relax. I probably would love to be an 'artist' and do nothing but draw all day or again, sit & observe others. I state on my profile that art should not be competitive (as I've seen in various ways) The sale of art can be, but the quality of the piece should not be... iIt is a way and means of expressing yourself...just a little bit of you...so you & others can know a part of you. I feel very uneasy about artists that compete with one another. It doesn't seem like art anymore, but more a sport; game or obsession. Creativity is a very admirable (not everyone has this either) and the many many ways to express it, to me, is what makes a true artist. Perhaps with more time, I shall reach those levels. I, like yourself, have been trying to draw daily for the last 4 yrs online & only recently on paper. Thank you, again, Xina for leaving me that very nice, unexpected comment to read & absorb. I do really appreciate it! ;-) L8*

You see, I signed up at the urging of online friends, checked the site out, did not do a single drawing, and whenever I next tried to sign on, I couldn't get in because I had forgotten the exact info. I had used. Pretty lame, I know, but it's unfortunate that there isn't a simple way to retrieve a username and password. Hi Christina, yes, you're right that we should go elsewhere if this insufferable lag continues. & thanks for reminding us that there are other places. I'll try again, but as MissA there notes, they're not all for just doodlers!

Hey Christina!

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly and for "getting it".

I've been signed on to 2draw since this morning, as well as sketchfu, and can't find the inspiration to draw on either.

Think I'll take a break, do some laundry, and maybe come back later and add Ginko as my 3rd and newest draw site. I would like to have a place to put all my work both online and offline. Might even encourage me to finish some of my offline stuff instead of putting it off....lol.

Thanks a bunch!

Robin
MissA_sketches wrote (5 months ago)
Thanks for the "surprise" comment....lol. I think it was an appropiate location too....lol.

Thanks for the comments on 2draw too. I really apprecciate it. I know you really love Ginko so I went and took a looksee. Not sure I would be a good fit there from some of the comments made concerning doodlers versus serious artists. I think I more fall in with doodlers, drawing more as a "hobby" or as a stress reliever. There's so much about art I am learning for the first time. I may never develop the skills to be really good. I just see it as an extension of self that I needed to embrace whether I get good at it or not. I do like the idea of being able to upload my offline work though. I'm usually prouder of my pencil sketches than I am of my digital art, but can only show that off here by reducing, (distorting), and using them as profile pic's here...ugh! If I understand it correctly, I could upload my sketches there and add to them? That would definitely be the biggest reason for me to use Ginko so it may happen yet. Haven't ruled it out, just not sure how everyone else there would feel about "embracing" my efforts rather than picking it apart. I'm still rather insecure and touchy about my art. To me, they mean alot, they're all treasures and pieces of me, good or bad, just part of life's journey.

I do welcome your thoughts on it. If you feel I've misinterpetted something, please do correct me. I'm open to suggestions and other ideas.

Keep those colors flowin' & hope you're having a Happy Easter!

Hi....yes I made the comment about the shadow being too dark before I saw your actual photo. That being said, it just does not look natural on the drawing. I am not sure why. I often make my black and whites in particular, with more contrast than they need, just my style I guess. I only commented because your pic said you wanted help, other wise I would never presume to say something about someones art. I think it is fabulous.....as I watched it being drawn, there just seemed to be some better spots to stop at, but I see now you are following the reference pick.

I also saw your comments at the other site after I found you at 2draw. I did go there and look at your gallery. I only saw the pbs (?) program, and I have been using the Laschuex (?) program. My spelling is atrocious. I may try it there just to check it out though. Gerbear has really been trying to get folks to go somewhere else tho. She has a real distaste for 2draw. They are very critical there. (like I was on your portrait, which I should not have done as I do not like it myself, but as I said I thought you were asking for advice....so sorry)

Take care dear lady and keep drawing....you are wonderful.

Hey, thanks for adding that perspective shadows thing to the tutorials. I haven't been on Sketchfu for a while, so good to know I'm still remembered =) Will be back eventually!

You asked about other things I did with perspective, and there's a few:

One point perspective:
http://sketchfu.com/drawing/38404-feeling-lost
http://sketchfu.com/drawing/44689-market-street-at-night

Two point perspective:
http://sketchfu.com/drawing/38521-retro-submarine
http://sketchfu.com/drawing/36269-a-cardboard-box-

And here's a better example of perspective shadows:

Hope what you were looking for is in there somewhere!

Chris and I are the ones who dragged all the YouDrawers over here. You know how I love FU and the community drawings and the FU drawings. I p[ersonally feel this drawing program has plenty of stuff to make magnificent drawings, I dont think my bubbles would have been any better at 2draw then here or Aragorn. I know the lag is bad for commenting but have not had issues with it in drawing unless my draw took too long. I saw that contest at Ginko and had a great idea for it, but we are going to beach tomorrow (my Thursday) and not returning until Monday or possibly even Tuesday and I have no internet there. gerbear wrote (5 months ago)
Hey girl!1 *hugs8 I have looked in at the place you mentioned and really thought it looked like a nice SMALL and supportive site. I know how to use those programs a lil bit because they are the same programs they use on 2draw, the owner of 2draw wrote the code for one of them for sure. My problem is time, I get into very detailed work with those kinds of programs and I barely have the time for here and youdraw now and then. If people keep leaving here tho I might consider going there. Also my frustration with M & A about not doing anything about the site is very frustrating. i cannot get thru galleries because of the lag. that means I am ignoring lots of things i dont want to because of time. there are 23,000 ppl here now, they need to do something or every single decent artist here will walk. I wish they had a relationship with somebody here who could talk to them. I know they just think i am some old lady who complains a lot *L* We need a spokesperson, somebody young and who is a really good artist. I think we would have a better chance of getting their attention.

HA! i have a pic like that...one of me when i was about 24..that is about 1/2 my age too. i had thought about doing that one because it is one of the only pics of me that i actually thought was good!! :O .... anyway, your pic is very pretty, as i'm sure you still are, and i'll be looking forward to seeing it finished! :)

Soumds good. I have a lot of irons in the fire...I may have a slow start.LOL I agree with the guys who oversee this sight. They have a laid back approach it seems. The weekend thing was frustraiting. No having the site up and running , and not a word it would be that way, or an explanation afterward. Meno said Dorthy Hamil hair style. Yes that is what it is ...your hair!

Thanks for the invite. Does one have to say who invited them when registering? If so, who do I say. I am a little nervous about drawing somewhere else. I will challange myself though. Do you have your wing raised for this fledgling. LOL ((( hugs))))

Re: Dorothy Hamill ... she was an Olympic figure skater who popularized the very hairstyle you're sporting in your pic. Ah, yes, the 20s were good years for all of us :)

Thanks very much for your high praise on my sunset. Yes the lag is bad at times. My family says I am a bulldog. LOL Once I get hold I don't let go. That is good and bad!!! I signed up at 2draw. Have not done anything there yet. Maybe later. :) I have just gotten started here. My friendships are developing here. Hate to leave that. Several as you know went there. Isn't the one you are drawing on need someone to invite you there? Thanks for your wonderful support and comments.

Oh and btw, those "feet" aren't really feet. That's a coaster, and it has markings on it.

Hi again- well i dont know about others but all i can see is a red cross in a box, so I went and clicked on the "see fullsize image" bar at the top of this page and it gave me the option of either saving your photo or opening it- I clicked open and could see it there as a word document or something. I tried saving it in photoshop - but it doesnt show up there... I wonder if Im the only person that cant see it? anyway yes I just think that because of the shadows round your eyes on the photo you are making them a bit small and close together- I would try and draw from your photo but when I click ionto sketchfu your photo doesnt stay open but minimises... Im no computer geek so dont know what to do- phew- long message!!!

Thanks for the pic Xina- its a tif file and when I opened it I could see that you have got the eye heights right but I do think you have drawn your eyes a little to close together. If you save it as a jpeg image it shoule be visible on your profile- you need to go to your file and go to save as- then select jpeg the reason for this is that that type of file is smaller- compressed, and should show up as an image on your profile. If you want I can convert it in photoshop and email it back to you...I do think you almost have it right with your self portrait
